The role of social media on body image concerns among women.
Why is it that so many girls and young women are dissatisfied with their bodies, regardless of the size? Research depicts that body image concerns in the past decade develop relatively early, emerging among children as young as age 7 and appear to exist across diverse levels of body size and race. (Dohnt & Tiggemann, 2006a;Grabe & Hyde, 2006).
Exposure to media images and messages depicting the thin-ideal body is related to body image concerns and dissatisfaction. Thus, in many ways, body dissatisfaction has emerged as a core aspect of women’s physical and mental health (MIND).
Among the many forces believed to play a role (in addition to parental messages and peer-related teasing) is the increasingly thin “ideal” body image dominating the media.
Across movies, magazines, and television programs, social media eg. Facebook. Thinness is consistently emphasised & rewarded for women.
